On the hunt for Mekanek: One of the coolest villains of the era searches for one of the silliest.
I love Skeletor. A barbarian warlord with the head of the Grim Reaper. It's amazing that even in the 80s, a time where kid's toys and entertainment licenses seemed to have an "anything goes" policy regarding creativity, the Master of the Universe line was greenlit and THRIVED.
It's classic now, but at the time parents were seriously affected by the Satanic Panic, a left over fear from the 70s where the idea of Satanists stealing of brainwashing their kids was totally logical. MOTU is a world inspired not just by hard rock album covers, but also by the occult. I guess it makes sense that the cartoon was so cheesy. It had to show parents that this world of skulls, monsters, and magical women was just a playtime fantasy, not a recruiting vehicle for black religions.
OR WAS IT?
